Dolly Parton said that 'a belief in God is essential,' as her faith helped her through some of the most difficult times in her life and marriage to husband Carl Thomas Dean.The 72-year-old country star, speaking with Closer Weekly, said that 'it was a really bad time' amid depression and a partial hysterectomy in 1984, which impacted her ability to have children.'I hurt like everybody else,' the 9 To 5 star told the magazine. 'I'm not always happy ... sometimes God just has to smack you down.Scroll below for video  'He was almost saying, "Sit your pretty little a** down because we have to deal with some stuff!"'The Tennessee native told Closer she's reflective of the faith-driven strength of the Smoky Mountains region she grew up in, noting the resilience of the 'mountain strong' people there after the Gatlinburg wildfires struck in late 2016, leaving 14 people dead. 'Everybody's got that spiritual background,' Parton said. 'I think that good neighbors and faith and trust in God - and in one another - helps everyone pull together as a team.'You got to pull as a community; as a family. That's the only way you can keep going.' In her Dolly on Dolly book released last year, the country music stalwart admitted she thought of taking her own life with a gun, amid temptations to stray on her husband.The Jolene singer said, 'I grew up around macho men and have had my lovers that are that macho type I’m kinda drawn to that.'Parton wrote of the incident in which she contemplated suicide: 'I looked at [the gun] a long time.'Then, just as I picked it up, just to hold it, and look at it for a moment, our little dog, Popeye, came running up the stairs. The tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality. I suddenly froze and I put the gun down.'She said that in hindsight, she feels her dog 'was a spiritual messenger from God' amid the harrowing moment.'I don’t think I’d have done it, killed myself, but I can’t say for sure,' the Islands in the Stream performer wrote. 'Now that I’ve gone through that terrible moment, I can certainly understand the possibilities, even for someone solid like me, if the pain gets bad enough.'Dolly's sister Stella Parton, 69, told Closer Weekly that religion 'shaped Dolly into who she is today, inside and out.'Growing up with very little except our family connection and God meant everything,' Stella told the magazine. 'Our faith is the most important thing to all of us. It was the key to our survival.'
